Surveillance Video Captures Beating on Calle Ocho

A Miami man was beaten and robbed while walking to his job on Monday just off Calle Ocho.

“It all began at 6:50 a.m. and it ended around 6:52,” said Kenia Fallat of Miami Police.

Surveillance cameras were rolling across the street as the bare-knuckle brawl ensued. The victim, Francisco Cruz, 52, told NBC 6 that he never thought that he would be targeted for such a crime.

Cruz said the attack started around Southwest 8th Street and Fifth Avenue when the two men knocked him down. The attackers then beat Cruz, stole his wallet, and left him lying on the ground.

“They didn’t even, I think, convey a message,” said Fallat. “They just started rumbling through his pockets. This man was left in a pool of blood, and these two men walked off with the victim’s wallet.”

Cruz told NBC 6 that he remembered being grabbed and thrown onto his back. He said he was nearly helpless as the younger men beat him. A surveillance camera at a Shell Station across the street captured one of the suspects leaving the scene.

In all, the thieves walked away with the $500 Cruz had in his wallet from a week’s worth of work.

“Not only did they take his wallet, they took his peace of mind away,” said Fallat.
