Anti-Obama E-Mails Have Palm Beach Teach in Hot Water

Teacher facing suspension for forwarding Obama-critical e-mails at work

A Palm Beach County teacher who wasn't exactly swept up in the Obama Mania during last year's election may be suspended without pay for sending e-mails critical of the Commander-in-Chief.

Paula Prudente, a reading teacher at John I. Leonard High, is facing a 10-day suspension without pay for sending 18 e-mails while at work with negative viewpoints on Barack Obama in the months leading up to his election, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

The e-mails contained forwarded political cartoons and "political innuendos," according to school files.

Prudente, 54, who has worked for the school system since 1978, had been warned several times to knock it off, but the e-mails kept coming.

An investigation found that Prudente had violated a policy that curbs politicking while at work, and she was written up for gross insubordination. Prudente said she meant no harm by sending the e-mails.

"Mrs. Prudente stated that she liked the Republican Party and stated that the e-mails were sent to her and she forwards them out to other teachers because she thought they were funny," wrote Employee Relations investigator Ezra Dilbert.

Prudente's fate will be decided today by the school board.
