Mom of Wandering Toddler Not Charged

Boy, believed to be 2, found in diapers and shirt Monday morning

The mother of a toddler found wandering the streets of Miramar has been found, Miramar Police said.

The unidentified mom was at the police station being questioned by detectives Monday afternoon, hours after her 2-year-old son was spotted walking near a busy intersection in his diaper.

The mother was allowed to leave with her child and won't face charges at this time, police said.

The boy was found in the area of 27th Street and 83rd Avenue around 9:30 a.m., Miramar Police spokeswoman Tania Rues said.

The boy was wearing an orange Rocawear shirt and pull-ups and has a congenital birth defect to his left hand, Rues said.

His mother was cleaning the carpets in an upstairs room of the family's apartment when the toddler got loose, police said.

The boy's 10-year-old sister and another 10-year-old relative were supposed to be watching the toddler while the mother cleaned, she told police.

Somehow the toddler opened the door and walked out of the house. A neighbor saw the kid and the neighbor called police.

Another family member called the mother to tell her the child was on the news and police were looking for the parents, police said.

The Broward State Attorney's Office is reviewing the case to see if any charges should be filed.
