Haslem Practices, Return in Sight

Haslem takes part in shoot around

Udonis Haslem says he won't be 100 percent if he returns to the Miami Heat this season.

But he'll take 80 percent.

The Heat's main muscle in the middle took part in light practice workout Tuesday, his first action with the team since he tore a ligament in his foot Nov. 20.

Haslem put up a few shots on the practice floor and all indications (prayers) point to the heart and soul of the Heat to make it back on the court before the season ends.

"I want to be at 80 to 85 percent," he said. "100 percent? I probably won't be 100 percent until summertime or somewhere close to next season."

The Heat haven't needed Haslem during the 54 games he has missed, but this season has never been about the regular season. Haslem would fortify Miami's front line against the likes of the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers if they were to meet in the playoffs.

But there is a drawback to Haslem's return: the hated chemistry word.

Heat fans saw how things can get fouled up with Dwyane Wade and Mike Miller when they made their returns from injuries. There will likely be growing pains when Haslem returns, also.

Coach Erik Spoelstra would have to find a way to work Haslem into the rotation in a meaningful way.

From a pure talent standpoint, Haslem is head and shoulders above centers Joel Anthony, Erick Dampier and Zydrunas Ilgauskas at center, but those players have worked well with the Big Three.

Haslem, who plays power forward and center, only has experience on the floor with Dwyane Wade.

But U will provide much needed depth and toughness for the Heat, maybe the one thing the team is lacking right now.
