Marlins Allow 15 Hits in Loss to Cardinals

The Marlins fell for the seventh time this spring with their 9-2 loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday

The Miami Marlins allowed 15 hits in their 9-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Tom Koehler started for Miami and lasted 2.2 innings. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits, while walking a pair. Koehler has not been at his best thus far this spring, and owns a 6.35 E.R.A.

After Koehler's day came to an end, several relievers saw action for Miami. Hunter Cervenka, Junichi Tazawa, Kyle Lobstein, Jarlin Garcia and Matt Tomshaw all worked in relief for the Marlins. Tomshaw allowed five runs in his two innings of work and now has a 22.50 E.R.A this spring.

Offensively, the Marlins were working with a refreshed lineup. Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich and Martin Prado have all exited camp for World Baseball Classic duty. Their absence is giving Miami the chance to play some roster hopefuls on an everyday basis. Matt den Dekker started in this one and went 0-2 with a pair of strikeouts. In addition to den Dekker, the Marlins will likely give more at-bats to Brandon Barnes and Tyler Moore.

One player who also got an extra chance to shine in this game was Moises Sierra. The outfielder went 1-1 with a two-run double after entering the game late. Sierra has a lot of competition, and has not seen much action thus far. It is likely that the former Kansas City Royal will open the year in AAA for Miami.

Miguel Rojas was involved in a scary incident early in the game, when an errant throw appeared to hit him in the head. Rojas stayed down on the ground for a few minutes, but eventually left the field under his own power. The Marlins took Rojas out of the game, but did not provide an immediate update on his status.

The Marlins will have their first off day of the spring on Wednesday, before they visit the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
