Trade Rumors Swirl Around Dolphins

Dolphins have "explored the possibility" of grabbing Dwayne Bowe

The NFL trade deadline is today at 4 p.m., so naturally Tony Sparano's been asked about his desire to wheel and deal.

"I love my team," he said. "I like where we’re at."

Well, Sparano (and Parcells and Ireland), you know what they say: if you love something, set Ted Ginn, Jr. free.

And if he comes back to you, do it again.

According to Internet trade rumors (which are never, ever wrong), that's a possibility. Some say Baltimore, where former Miami HC Cam Cameron is offensive coordinator, "might have their interest piqued." Others think Miami might deal with Kansas City for Dwayne Bowe.

One thing is clear: the Dolphins lack that guy, that go-to receiver, that sure thing, that playmaker. Ginn has not been it. But is Bowe enough of an upgrade? And would Kansas City -- or anyone -- be interested in Ginn based on his unfulfilled physical potential? Ginn's fast, sure, and he's a good egg off the field and a team player and blah blah blah. He's also been dropsy and unreliable, while Davone Bess shows him up in yards after catch and Miami hasn't been stellar in returns where Ginn is supposed to shine.

On the other hand, Chad Henne is comfortable with Ginn, which is important for a new quarterback and was obvious last week, in Ginn's best showing.

But Chad Henne also isn't in kindergarten smearing himself in finger paint anymore. That's Phillip Rivers.

Pawning off Ginn, however, might be cost-prohibitive and just plain not worth it.

Kansas City reportedly wants a 2nd round pick, another mid-round pick, and even possibly something else for Bowe. It's unlikely that this Dolphins regime, who are big fans of building up through the draft, will be willing to give up so much to "save" this particular season. After all, it's not as if the Dolphins are one player away from the Super Bowl, and can't wait until the offseason for more and better options. They have needs all over the field, and draft picks are key for that.

Of course, Parcells or no, these are the Dolphins, and everything that entails can be summed up in the blog comment of one Dolphins fan: "Doesn't make sense to me right now, so that means it probably will happen."

Awww. Look what we've come to! But at least if something does go down, we'll have massive amounts of self-loathing and passivity to get us through The Change.

There are also rumors swirling around groin-challenged Matt Roth (no, he's not smooth like a Ken Doll, he's just twangy), who's finally expected back on Wednesday. Don't get too excited about those, either: yes, Roth's been shady and weird about this injury and the front office is said to be impatient with him. But the average age of Dolphins linebackers right now is about 47, and Roth comes proven and relatively cheap.

Janie Campbell is willing to trade the entire lineup of safeties for two bears on rollerskates set free in the backfield. Her work has appeared in irreverent sports sites around the Internet.
