Children who were on their way home from an after-school program were instead hospitalized after their bus crashed with another vehicle Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale.
The crash occurred at around 6:30 p.m. in the area of NW 15th Avenue and NW 19th Street, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
"People were screaming and crying," 10-year-old Jonasia Hamilton said. "Some white truck came out of nowhere and hit us and all the kids just took off their seatbelts and just started running out."
Six children on board, ages 7 to 12, including two adults, were taken to the hospital, according to fire officials. A passenger in the other vehicle was also transported.
"I got out of the bus, I was making sure my brother was okay and made sure everyone else was okay, and I called my uncle to tell him what happened," said Hamilton, who left Broward Health in crutches. She complained of having pain in her hip and thumb.
One child and one adult sustained serious injuries, and the rest had minor injuries, officials said.
Hamilton's relatives say the kids were on the bus home from an after-school program. It's unclear why the bus, which is owned by a private company, has an "adult day care" logo on it.
"I'm just worrying about them right now," said her uncle, Everett Hamilton.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
