5 Hospitalized in Crash Involving 18-Wheeler

Massive fuel spill shuts down several blocks after dangerous crash

A crash involving a small Honda and an 18-wheeler sent five people to the hospital and closed down several blocks of a Southwest Miami-Dade street after a large fuel spill Friday morning.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. at Coral Way and Southwest 84th Avenue in Westchester.

Witnesses said the both cars were traveling westbound on Coral Way when the Honda Accord collided with the tractor trailer as the truck was making a left turn.

Officials said three men and two women were in the Honda, and none of them were wearing seatbelts. One person had to be taken out of the car with the Jaws of Life, officials said.

The five were taken to Kendall Regional Hospital's Trauma Center.

Driver Alexandria Estrella, 23, and rear passenger Ana Posada, 18, were both in critical condition Friday, Miami-Dade Police said. Also injured were Moises Arnold Alvarez, 18, Anthony Emmanuel Del Rio, 18, and Jovanni Oliva, 20, all from Miami.

"A couple were unconscious...it was really bad," said Crystal Hernandez, who witnessed the crash.

The driver of the truck wasn't seriously injured.

Police said speed was one of the factors in the crash, but said it was unclear what was the cause of the impact.

The crash caused dozens of gallons of fuel to spill, and authorities had to shut down Coral Way between 82nd and 87th Avenue. Authorities said the road could be closed into the late morning.
