Funeral For BSO Deputy Killed in Motorcycle Crash

Family, friends and colleagues to say final goodbyes to deputy

Family, friends and fellow officers will say their last goodbyes Friday to a Broward Sheriff's deputy who was killed in a motorcycle accident on New Year's Day.

The funeral for Deputy John Blackwelder will take place at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth.

Blackwelder, a nine-year veteran with the BSO, was off-duty when his motorcycle was hit by a car in Oakland Park on the afternoon of Jan. 1.

The 45-year-old was heading west on East Commercial Boulevard on his 2010 Honda café-style motorcycle when a 2004 Cadillac heading east made a lefthand turn into his path at Northeast 3rd Avenue, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Cadillac's driver, 75-year-old Stajka Vangov, said she was on her way home from church and thought she had enough time to turn in front of the motorcycle.

Blackwelder, 45, was the father of two children. A U.S. Army veteran, he'll be buried with full military honors.
