Gov. Scott Appoints Two To Broward School Board

Rick Scott taps an autism consultant and real estate agent to replace Jennifer Gottlieb and Dave Thomas

Governor Rick Scott appointed a real estate agent and an educational consultant to two vacated positions on the embattled Broward School Board on Friday.

Both are Republican, but not overtly political. Fort Lauderdale resident Kathrine Leach, 39, a consultant with Nova Southeastern who trains teachers to work with children with autism, replaces Jennifer Gottlieb at one of two county-wide seats.

Donna Korn, 40, a former teacher-turned-real eastate agent from Davie, was tapped to replace Dave Thomas as the representative for northwestern Broward's District Four despite living in District Six.

Korn had applied for the vacant Broward schools superintendent job, according to the Sun-Sentinel, but has withdrawn her name.

Leach says she will continue with her plans to run against incumbent school board member Maureen Dinnen for the Distric 3 seat in 2012, but told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that though that could become 'awkward' she 'is not a negative person.

Both women have children who attend Broward public schools.

The Governor's appointments were made necessary when Gottlieb and Thomas resigned within a day of each other several weeks ago. The district lost its superintentent when Jim Notter resigned in late June, and two members have been removed from office due to scandal in the last two years.

The new appointments are effective until November 19, 2012.
