Trayvon Martin Shooting Leads to ‘Neighborhood Watch' Movie Promo Being Removed

Movie promos pulled as more South Florida rallies planned

Promotional materials for the upcoming comedy film "Neighborhood Watch" starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn have been pulled by Twentieth Century Fox in the wake of the shooting of Miami teen Trayvon Martin.

The studio said Tuesday that early "teaser" trailer and in-theater posters have been removed from Florida theaters and will soon be phased out nationally.

Stiller and Vaughn play suburban dads who become neighborhood watch volunteers and eventually battle aliens.

Fox stressed in a statement that the film "bears absolutely no relation to the tragic events in Florida," and said the company is "very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case." The film is set for release in July.

"I think it does make me think of the Trayvon Martin case," said Cinemax moviegoer Justin Ortiz.

Martin, 17, was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman on Feb. 26 in Sanford.

Though Martin was unarmed, Zimmerman told police the shooting was self-defense, and no charges have been filed in the case.

The FBI and U.S. Department of Justice are investigating the shooting and Florida Gov. Rick Scott has appointed a special prosecutor to oversee the investigation into the shooting.

Scott said Wednesday he met with Martin's parents right before he announced the appointment of the special prosecutor on March 22.

Outrage over a lack of an arrest in the shooting has led to several marches and rallies throughout South Florida and across the country.

Amid the protests and a national outcry, black Democrats in the state are calling on for near immediate action, including holding a special session to consider whether to repeal the state's seven-year-old "Stand Your Ground" law which eliminated a person's duty to retreat when threatened with seriously bodily harm or death.

"I saw the trailer and I didn't even put two and two together," said Kimberly Pitt of the movie.

Two separate marches in South Florida were planned for Wednesday night.

Thousands of members of Miami's Haitian community will gather at 5 p.m. for a march and candlelight ceremony for Martin in Little Haiti. The group will meet at 62nd Street and North Miami Avenue.

At 5:30 p.m., students at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton will gather for a march at the school's student union.

And at 7 p.m. New Mount Olive Baptist Church will have a prayer rally for Martin with a panel of attorneys discussing the "Stand Your Ground" law, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
