Two people have died after a boat overturned in the ocean off Dania Beach Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
Officials said three men were on board the 22-foot boat when it overturned around 2 p.m. The incident happened off N. Ocean Drive and Dania Beach Boulevard.
One of the boaters swam to another vessel for help but the other two were found dead in the water. The names of the victims haven't been released.
The boat was completely submerged and later sunk, Broward Sheriff's Fire said. Crews were salvaging the boat and bringing it to a Fort Lauderdale boat ramp.
It's unknown how the boat became capsized.
Crews from the Coast Guard, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Broward Sheriff's Office all responded to the scene after a 911 call about a vessel in distress.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles urged caution on the water ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.
"Please use caution. We want everyone to enjoy the holidays, but be safe and be smart," Jachles said.
