86-Year-Old Florida Mother Says She Shot, Killed Son in Self-Defense: Authorities

Nancy Pennypacker was shot once, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said

An 86-year-old central Florida mother said she fatally shot her son in self-defense, authorities said.

Nancy Pennypacker ran outside of her home at 1610 Reynolds Road in Lakeland screaming for help Friday night, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said. She told a deputy her 64-year-old son had been drinking and hit her in the face when the fight escalated into gunfire, which the deputy heard while on patrol at about 10:25 p.m., The Lakeland Ledger reported.

William Pennypacker was found dead inside the home. The bullet that struck his mother traveled through her finger and into her right shoulder, the sheriff’s office said.

Nancy Pennypacker is in stable condition at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, the hospital said.
The sheriff’s office said criminal charges are not expected, the Ledger reported.

Nancy Pennypacker said her son suffered from depression and had threatened to harm himself in the past. He had also been arrested for battery and aggravated assault against his mother, according to the sheriff’s office.
