Dad Rages at YMCA Leader's Bathroom Photography

Family demands answers for alleged voyeurism at Lauderdale YMCA

A Fort Lauderdale father says he was outraged when he found out a group leader at a YMCA day camp had been arrested for taking photos of his young son in a boy's bathroom stall.

"Violate my son's rights, personal rights,"said an angry Frank Wilson Thursday, after his son fell victim to the disturbing crime.

Wilson arrived at the LA Lee YMCA Family Center only to find out that his 10 year old son was photographed allegedly by his counselor, while on the toilet. The surprising news caught the family members off guard, as they demanded answers from officials on the campus at 408 Northwest 14 Terrace in Fort Lauderdale.

According to Fort Lauderdale police, 22-year-old Jarrell Jarvis King reached over the bathroom stall and began taking pictures of the child on the toilet against his will.

"He thought it was embarrassing to him cause it was shown to other kids," said Wilson.

Judy Erickson, Director of Marketing and Communications for the YMCA Broward County, said King admitted to taking the pictures as a practical joke, but this was no laughing matter. When police arrived on the scene, King was arrested, however he had already deleted the photos.

He was charged with video voyeurism and tampering with evidence.

Erickson said all their employees go through extensive background checks and drug screenings along with training.  Thursday afternoon, the Y released a letter to parents and guardians informing them of the incident.

The letter stated, "Safety is our primary concern; however we continue to review for possible areas of improvement."

King is out on bond. According to the Y, he has been placed on leave pending further investigation.
