Broken Sewer Line Creates Stink in Fort Lauderdale

Broken line causes minor flooding on Cordova Road

A broken sewer line caused quite a stink in Fort Lauderdale after a large amount of sewage water flooded a street and parking lot Thursday.

The 54-inch sewer line broke in the area of the 1800 block of Cordova Road, according to the Fort Lauderdale Public Works Department.

"All of a sudden, we noticed the roads, and the smell, and everything filling up with water," said Michelle Radich, who had to close her boutique for the day. " "I saw people taking their shoes off and walking in it because they had to get to their car. They had to get their car out of here."

Businesses stayed open as workers were sent out to fix the brake.

Officials said there was no impact on drinking water, but were urging citizens to reduce water use while they made repairs.

Fort Lauderdale provides water to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park, Port Everglades Authority, Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, Wilton Manors and sections of Davie and Tamarac.

"There's no telling how long it's going to take. Once they open it up and get down to the pipe, they'll start repairs," said David Engram of the city's Public Works Department. "It smells really bad."
