Broward Sheriff's Office Deputy Dies After Pompano Beach Accident: Authorities

He was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center: BSO

An on-duty Broward Sheriff’s Office motorcycle deputy died after an accident in Pompano Beach Wednesday, the BSO said.

Deputy Christopher Schaub, 47, died Wednesday evening at Broward Health Medical Center, where hundreds of fellow deputies had gathered, the BSO said.

He was airlifted there in critical condition following a Wednesday afternoon accident, according to Pompano Beach Fire Rescue.

“We have over 50 motorcycle deputies, and they know it can happen to any one of them,” Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti said. "So we’re all going to get through it together. It’s a sad day, it’s a tough day, especially for the family."

Schaub's motorcycle and a silver Mercedes collided at West McNab Road and North Andrews Avenue in Pompano Beach, the BSO said. The accident was reported at 2:23 p.m., the BSO added.

Schaub was later operated on at the hospital.

The female driver of the Mercedes was not seriously injured, but was taken to Broward Health North, BSO spokesman Mike Jachles said.

Traffic homicide investigators were on the scene and were going to interview witnesses to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash, Jachles said.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area during rush hour because the investigation will take some time, he said.

Schaub had been with the department for 22 years. He leaves behind his son, who is also a BSO deputy.
