Could Tropical Park be the new home of the annual Miami-Dade County Youth Fair?
In November, Miami-Dade County voters approved a plan from Florida International University that would let the school expand onto part of the fairgrounds on 107th Avenue in Miami-Dade County.
Some residents are not happy with the idea of The Fair possibly heading to Tropical Park.
A representative at Florida International University believes it is too expensive of an option to consider.
“I'm worried that there will be some backdoor dealings, we've seen the county give up park land, we've seen Trump try to take over golf course. These parks are for people, not private entities or 501c corps to take control of them,” Ricardo Gomez said.
County Commissioner Javier Souto says he will do everything he can to preserve the park the way it is.
“I'm saying over my dead body, they'll have to kill me first,” Souto said.
The Fair’s CEO said Miami-Dade County has not approached him about the park as being a valuable site and is convinced to keeping the event in Tamiami for a long time.
