Central Florida Man Bitten by Pet Viper

Officials say a central Florida man is being treated in a hospital after being bitten by a highly venomous snake.

Winter Park police say they were called to the man's home Thursday evening after his pet Gaboon viper bit him. Authorities say the man had several venomous snakes at the home, including a second Gaboon.

His condition was not immediately available.

Florida Fish and Wildlife spokesman Greg Workman told the Orlando Sentinel the man had the proper permits and cages to keep the snakes.

Police said the snake was secured and no one in the neighborhood was in danger.

The Gaboon viper is typically found in the tropical forests of central and west Africa. They grow to about 6 feet long.
