Child Dies After Being Run Over by Truck in Dania Beach

The truck was backing out of a driveway when it hit the child.

Broward Sheriff's deputies released the identities Sunday of a 4-year-old child who died after being run over a truck and the driver who was behind the wheel of the vehicle when it struck the child.

Officials said 52-year-old Michael Reshick, was backing the truck out of a residential driveway at 4712 SW 33 Ave. when it struck 4-year-old Xavier Crawford.

Crawford was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The 4-year-old had been attending another child's birthday party in the neighborhood, where he and his family had recently moved, according to neighbors. Crawford was riding a scooter on a shared driveway, just steps from his front door, when he was hit.

Reshick was backing out of the parking space in front of his home when Crawford rode his scooter behind the truck, deputies said. The child was struck and fell to the pavement, sustaining serious head injuries.

"I heard the hit and ran that way," said witness Angel Cuevas. "Just saw the kid on the floor and saw the mom pick him up. It was hard."

Cuevas said the boy's mother was desperately holding onto her son.

"The mom, she was in shock holding the kid, not wanting to let go, being a mom," Cuevas said.

Reshick stayed on scene and cooperated with officials. Witnesses told police Reshick appeared to be backing out of the parking space "slowly and cautiously," according to a news release.

It's still unclear if Reshick will face any charges.
