Coral Gables Thieves Target Doorstep Packages: Police

Coral Gables Police are telling residents to be cautious when having boxes delivered to their homes after a pair of burglars were caught snatching packages off doorsteps.

The arrests were made Tuesday when an officer stopped a car after it pulled into a driveway and quickly drove away on South Alhambra Circle.

The driver, 20-year-old Adalberto Martinez, was nervous and not answering questions, police said. The officer noticed several packages in the back of the car and Martinez told him they belonged to his cousins.

But Martinez and his passenger, 18-year-old Sharon Baldriche, didn't know the names or addresses on the packages and police discovered they had been taken from two homes, police said.

Martinez and Baldriche were both charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure and larceny and they were booked into jail. It was unknown whether they have attorneys.

Police are suggesting residents request signature confirmation of delivery, contact the shipping company and arrange for delivery at a time when you will be available or make another arrangement to make sure your package isn't stolen.
