Doggies Seek New SoFla Homes After Irene

Dogs brought from Puerto Rico to Broward after shelter destroyed

Nearly four dozen dogs who survived Hurricane Irene in Puerto Rico are looking for new homes in South Florida after their shelter was destroyed.

The 47 dogs arrived at Miami International Airport Tuesday and were taken to the Humane Society of Broward County, where they'll be given time to rest and eat before they become available for adoption, hopefully by Wednesday, Humane Society VP of marketing Cherie Wachter said.

The dogs are mixed breeds and are mostly puppies, with some young adults, Wachter said.

"They're cute and cuter," Wachter said. "They're young, some of them are very lovable and outgoing, there are definitely some that are a little bit more shy. Nothing that  a lot of love can't cheer."

Wachter said the dogs had been staying at the Save a Sato shelter in San Juan when Irene hit last week. The shelter, which has been operating for the past 25 years, received extensive damage from flooding and wind.

All the dogs will be spayed or neutered and fitted with a microchip before adoption, Wachter said.

Anyone interested in adopting one of the dogs can visit the shelter at 2070 Griffin Road or visit www.humanebroward.com.
