Elderly Man Leads Police on Low-Speed Chase Across Two South Florida Counties

An 86-year-old man with dementia led authorities on a low-speed chase through two South Florida counties before he was taken into custody early Wednesday, officials said.

Police responded to the man's home on Northwest 5th Place in Lauderhill around 7 p.m. Tuesday after he reportedly fired a handgun into the ground and was waving handguns around, Lauderhill Police said.

The man had been approached by a public adjuster at his home who tried to give the elderly man a business card, police said.

The elderly man pointed a revolver at the public adjuster and said "I just want to give you this," police said. The public adjuster and his associate fled to their car.

When officers arrived they ordered the man to drop his weapons but he replied "shoot me," police said.

The man walked down the sidewalk and back to his home, where he got into his car and led officers on a low-speed pursuit, police said.

The man refused to stop and led officers on a chase along A1A, starting near Deerfield Beach and entering Palm Beach County.

Police said the man did not appear aggressive and obeyed traffic signals, and officers decided to stop following him near Pompano Beach.

The man was found by the Manalapan Police Department around 7 a.m. Wednesday. He was taken to an area hospital, while police say they found two weapons inside the van.

Police said the man's issues were mental-health related and not criminal, and no charges have been filed.
