For Make-A-Wish Southern Florida's 9,000th Wish, Fort Pierce Kid Goes Fishing in Keys

Michael LaMore, 12, went on a fishing trip off Islamorada

Fishing rod in hand, 12-year-old Michael LaMore of Fort Pierce angles like a pro, living out his dream, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“My wish was go to saltwater fishing to catch dolphin, go to the Florida Keys for the week,” LaMore said.

LaMore gives each swing everything he's got, even though he suffers from a ventricular septal defect – a condition many know as a “hole in the heart.” The condition is often diagnosed at birth, and is treatable.

Off the coast of Islamorada Thursday, LaMore and his loved ones were not the only ones celebrating.

“Michael's wish is our 9,000th,” said Richard Kelly of the Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “We're really proud of that milestone. Not too many chapters have achieved that."

Though Michael's family was able to make the trip with him, he also picked a new family in the volunteers down in the Keys who helped provide food, shelter and the boat Michael took out.
