Legislature To Vote on Florida Budget

Gov. Rick Scott can sign the budget, veto it, or use a line-item veto to eliminate specific projects.

Florida lawmakers will finish their annual session by voting for a $70 billion budget.

Legislators are scheduled Friday to approve a budget that calls for cuts to health care, state universities and includes thousands of layoffs.

The proposed budget calls for increased spending on public schools even though it won't make up for cuts made a year ago.

Gov. Rick Scott warned he would veto the budget if it did not include a "significant" increase for education.

Democrats, however, are expected to vote against the budget. They say it hurts the state's working class, while helping out corporate interests. That's because legislators have money set aside for more than $100 million in tax cuts.

Scott can sign the budget, veto it, or use a line item veto to eliminate specific projects.
