Man Arrested After BSO Deputy's Death in On-Duty Crash

A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy who was killed in an on-duty crash last month in Deerfield Beach.

Darran Joseph Johnson, 32, of Boynton Beach, faces charges of vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter and 11 other criminal counts and infractions.

Deputy Benjamin Nimtz was responding to a domestic dispute call July 21 when Johnson ran a red light near Military Trail and SW 10th Street and struck Nimtz's patrol vehicle.

Nimtz was died at the hospital. Investigators said his emergency lights and siren were activated at the time of the crash.

Nimtz is survived by his wife and two children. Thousands gathered in Fort Lauderdale earlier this month at his funeral services.
