Man Shot in the Face During Home Invasion

Armed burglars target migrant workers, chased off by victim's son

A man is in critical condition after he was shot in the face during a home invasion in Homestead Tuesday night, police said.

Two armed burglars forced their way into the home at 14101 SW 282nd Street around 8 p.m. There were five men inside the home who police say appeared to be migrant workers.

After the bad guys got in, there was a struggle with one of the men. That's when the gunman shot the victim in the face.

The victim's son, determined to defend his father, ran to get a gun and shot at the burglars, who took off on foot. The victim's son rushed his dad to an area hospital and he was later airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The victim remains in critical condition.

"We have seen cases that are similar to this, where many of the residents around here work in area farms and carry cash and unfortunately because of that they're targeted," said Detective Roy Rutland with Miami-Dade Police. "This may be that kind of crime, we're still looking into those details."

Authorities are working to come up with a description of the burglars, who are considered armed and dangerous. If you have any information, please call Crimestoppers at (305) 471- TIPS.
