Miami-Dade Police Help Fix Up Woman's Home

Miami-Dade Police officers went above and beyond the call of duty Saturday, pitching in to lend a helping hand to a woman in desperate need of some home repairs.

"My blessings is here, I don't have to worry anymore," homeowner Judith Hayes said.

For more than 40 years, Hayes has called Little River Boulevard home. But times got tough and repairs were delayed. And just as things started looking up the septic tank backed up, another financial setback.

"I prayed that one day I would be able to finish off the house," Hayes said.

That's when coordinators with the Miami-Dade Police Department's Home Beautification Project stepped in.

"It's the passion, the love, everything they put into it, it's awesome," Hayes said.

"We get the opportunity to protect all the time, that's what we do all day everyday, but we don't get very many opportunities to serve," Miami-Dade Police Maj. Ricky Carter said.

Thanks to Lowes and various community groups, assisting senior citizens in need comes at no cost to the homeowner.

"Every four months we hope to identify someone and be able to help them out with a little bit of home beautification and restoration," Carter said.

Officers, volunteers, and everyone who came out Saturday said this week-long effort is a labor of love with pretty impressive before and after pictures.
