Homeowner Shoots Intruder Outside Miami Home

Miami Police are investigating a morning shooting that sent one man to the hospital in an area suffering from a rash of home invasions recently, according to residents.

Officers responded to a home off Northeast 42nd Street just east of Miami Avenue. They say the man, identified as Dennis Harris, was in the backyard of the home when the homeowner opened fire, striking Harris on the side of his torso. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently undergoing surgery.

"He was caught off guard by the homeowner coming out of the house," said Officer Yelitza Cedano.

Neighbors in the area say they have experienced recent break-ins at their homes and that the shooter in today’s incident had recently been the victim of several break-ins, but officials have not confirmed that information and continue to investigate. A pair of bolt cutters were found on the ground.

"This street apparently isn't safe even though it looks safe," said neighbor Rachel Straub.
