Mother Responsible for Broward Toddler's Death: Attorney

The lawyer for the Broward man arrested in the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son says his client is not guilty.

Corey Gordon, 29, is charged with first degree murder in the death of 3-year-old Khyese Anthony Coach, son of his girlfriend, 20-year-old Chantel Haye, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

But now Gordon and his attorney, Gawane Grant, claim Haye is responsible for the child's death.

Grant said the boy was already bruised up when Gordon picked him up to babysit him Monday while Haye went to work. He said Haye told Gordon she "messed up" and beat the child with an object.

Gordon allegedly admitted to slapping the child in the face Monday, but not severely.

"When the mother gave the child to my client and the child was going up the stairs he was falling down, this child was already seriously injured," Grant said. "Inside my client's house the child was vomiting so we believe he was suffering internal bleeding."

Gordon remained behind bars Thursday without bond. The Department of Children and Families investigated Haye before but she was cleared. She hasn't been charged in Coach's death.

Grant also said Haye is pregnant with Gordon's child.
