Nudists Plea for Bare Beach in Keys

Pol wants voters to decide on naked sand haven

If you venture down south you may soon see a little more skin on the sands than you'd like to if a Key West group gets their way.

Florida Keys Free Beaches, a group which advocates nudist activities in Key West, has been lobbying for a nude beach in the city for awhile, and it looks like they may get to plead their case with voters.

City Commissioner Bill Verge wants voters to decide whether the nude beach will be allowed, and next week he'll ask the commission to include the issue on an October ballot.

The current law prohibits nudes on the beach. Florida Keys Free Beaches, which calls itself a "naturist group," promotes bare-skinned pastimes like nude sailing, and is looking for name ideas for the proposed nudist beach.

Some of the suggestions so far have been "Allover Beach," "Bare Beach" and "Nakedise Key West," according to the group's Website.

Verge's proposal has to pass two public readings to be included on the Oct. 6 ballot.
