Police-Involved Shooting Sends Couple to Hospital Following Domestic Dispute in Sunrise

An officer-involved shooting in Sunrise sent one man to the hospital after he allegedly held a knife to his wife’s throat late Thursday.

Crews responded to the family’s home near Southwest 159th Avenue and 159th Way shortly before midnight after a domestic disturbance call. Once at the scene, police found the man and wife inside the home.

After refusing to drop the knife, the officer fired one shot, hitting the man, officials said. He was rushed to Broward Health in stable condition, while the wife was taken to a separate hospital with minor injuries.

Police later identified the man as 49-year-old Victor Manuel Maldonado. He's expected to be charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and armed sexual battery.

According to police, the couple has a history of domestic violence from when they lived in New York. They reportedly also have two children, who are staying with family in the area, police said.

The officer will be placed on paid leave pending an investigation.
