Felony Suspect in Custody After Search in Pembroke Pines

Police in Pembroke Pines have one person in custody after an active, early morning search for a felony suspect Wednesday.

A large police presence was established in the area of Northwest 14th Street and 77th Avenue in Pembroke Pines just after 4 a.m.

According to Pembroke Pines Police, an officer patrolling the area spotted 25-year-old Billy Hockaday walking his dog around 3:30 a.m. The officer saw that Hockaday had an active warrant out for his arrest for carrying a concealed weapon. Backup was called in.

Hockaday asked the officers if he could put his dog away, then suddenly pushed the officers and ran into his home, slamming the door onto the officers. Police say the force of the door slam shattered the glass, causing minor lacerations to an officer's face.

Police eventually caught up with Hockaday who was hiding behind the bushes in the rear of his home. He was apprehended by K9 unit around 6:30 a.m. Hockaday suffered some lacerations caused by the K9 and is being treated at Memorial Regional Hospital.

Hockaday has not been formally charged, but will likely face charges of batter on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest, according to police.
