BSO Deputy Involved in Deadly Teen Crash Fired

Officer in collision with 14-year-old girl terminated

Two months after he was involved in a high-speed collision that killed a teen girl, a Broward Sheriff's deputy has been fired, the BSO announced Wednesday.

Deputy Franklyn McCurrie, hired by BSO just last year, was involved in the January crash that killed 14-year-old Cara Catlin in Oakland Park.

"Franklyn McCurrie's employment with the Broward Sheriff's Office has been terminated for failure to meet probationary standards," said Sheriff Al Lamberti in a statement. "The unfortunate and devastating crash in which he was involved remains under investigation."

Catlin was a passenger in a Honda Civic, driven by stepsister Heather Meyer, at North Dixie Highway and Northeast 56th St. when it was struck by McCurrie's patrol car.

McCurrie was heading to back up another deputy performing a traffic stop when the collision occurred. The Civic's entire backside was sawed off by the patrol car.

McCurrie's lights and sirens weren't on, and estimates put McCurrie driving as fast as 89 mph when the accident happened.

The BSO made a brief statement shortly after the accident, saying that Meyer was turning into oncoming traffic at the time of the accident, a driving infraction.
