Grenade Scare Evacuates Miramar School

Bomb Squad called to Somerset Academy, police say device inactive

A South Florida school was evacuated Tuesday after reports that a student brought a grenade to class.

The incident happened at Somerset Academy, at 2000 South State Road 7 in Miramar shortly before noon.

Police said a fourth grader brought the potentially explosive device to the school. The child was being interviewed by investigators to determine where the grenade came from.

A Bomb Squad was called to the school to check it out, but Miramar Police later said the device was a practice grenade and inactive, and students were seen returning to class.

Dozens of students were seen assembling outside the school while the incident was investigated. School was back in session by 1 p.m.

The school has said they don't plan on punishing the student, which is odd considering students have been expelled for bringing far less to school.

Police don't plan on pressing criminal charges.
