A South Florida organization is attempting to rebuild the Bahamas by sending 500,000 pounds of relief supplies to the area each week.

The group, Global Empowerment Mission, has already sent nearly 300,000 pounds of relief since Hurricane Dorian. They say the big need now is construction supplies.

"Many of the homes can be repaired," Global Empowerment Mission founder Michael Capponi says.

The effort began when Capponi opened a warehouse in Little Haiti to collect items immediately after Dorian made landfall.

After partnering with Bethenny Frankel's BStrong organization, the group opened a much larger facility located at 7171 Northwest 12th Ave.

On Sunday, palette after palette of relief filled a downtown Miami sidewalk, as supplies were hoisted onto a 220-foot yacht for the first of two trips this week.

"We can squeeze in 1.4 million [pounds of relief] if you can figure it out properly," Capponi says.
