Structural Problems Cause Miami School Closure

700 students to be displaced from North Dade Middle School

Children at a Miami-Dade school were greeted this morning by workers loading classroom contents into moving trucks after building problems made much of the school unsafe.

Starting tomorrow, students at North Dade Middle School in Opa Locka will have a new school-- temporarily -- as workers will start repairs on the school building which officials said has "structural concerns."

Some students will be staying at the school, in areas including the cafeteria and auditorium which are still safe, but the majority of students, some 700 or so, will be bussed to North Miami Senior High for their classes.

Though the school sent an automated message out to most parents last night describing the situation, many who showed up and saw moving vans were unaware and angry they didn't know about the partial closure.

"This is just really a travesty...they owe us some answers," said mother Yvonne Young.

And with FCAT testing less than a week away, many parents were left wondering what sort of impact the change of scenery might have on the exams.

"This is something that should have been done at the end of the school year," Young said.

The school said they just learned of the problems earlier this week, and that the move should only take about a day.
