Suspects Sought in Armed Carjacking of Tourist: Miami-Dade Police

Police are looking for three suspects who carjacked a tourist at gunpoint in the parking lot of a Miami hotel.

The carjacking happened the morning of Aug. 12 in the parking lot of the Provident Doral at the Blue Miami at 5300 Northwest 87th Avenue, Miami-Dade Police said.

Security camera video shows a silver Toyota Tundra casing the place. Police said it was the getaway car.

Elvyn Sosa, 19, was inside his family's rented Chevy Tahoe, which had a Texas license tag. He had just packed it for their trip home, and suddenly a man stuck a gun in his face. Another man walking by was an accomplice.

"He's actually sitting in the vehicle, the passenger seat, waiting for his father to come down with the rest of the family and at that time, it's when the subject approaches, opens the driver door and brandishes the handgun, telling the victim not to move," said Lt. John Jenkins with Miami-Dade Police. "Of course, anyone in that situation would panic, he did, exited the vehicle and took off running."

Sosa ran for his life, scared to death, after being carjacked. Police said he did the right thing.

"These guys are dangerous. Thankfully, he was able to get out of the vehicle and run," Lt. Jenkins said.

The two men took off in the rental car. A third suspect, who was in the silver Toyota Tundra, also fled the scene.

The victim wasn't injured and the stolen vehicle has not been recovered.

Police released video of the incident and a sketch of one of the suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
