Tropical Wave in Atlantic Forecast to Become Storm, Not Impact South Florida

What to Know

  • The area of showers and thunderstorms near the Leeward Islands has a 30 percent chance of development over the next two days.
  • A cold front coming through South Florida by the end of the week will likely keep this potential system off shore.

With just under three weeks to go in hurricane season for 2018, a tropical wave in the Atlantic Ocean has a strong chance of developing into a named storm – but forecasters do not expect it to come toward South Florida or the United States.

The area of showers and thunderstorms near the Leeward Islands has a 50 percent chance of development over the next two days and a 70 percent chance over the next five days.

While the storm could cause some issues for places like Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Bahamas, a cold front coming through South Florida by the end of the week will likely keep this potential system off shore and from causing any problems for our area.

That same cold front will cause South Florida to feel like fall for the first time with Friday’s morning low expected to be in the lower 60s and highs in the mid-70s – a trend that will continue through the weekend with highs not forecasted to reach 80 degrees.
