Woman Charged in Botched Penis Procedure Seeks Release From Jail

A woman accused of performing a series of illegal surgical procedures that left a South Florida man with a severely deformed penis was back in court Wednesday seeking her release from jail.

Nery Carvajal, shackled wearing an orange jumpsuit, appeared in a Miami-Dade courtroom seeking to have a bond set. She's been in jail since police officers arrested her last month.

The bond was set at $60,000.

"We will make every attempt as $60,000 is still a lot of money for her to be coming up with considering the circumstances that she's been in custody for several weeks," defense attorney Jean Claude Dugue said.

The victim, a 55-year-old man, went to Carvajal for butt injections and facial treatments. Later, he paid Carvajal for a penile enlargement at her Hialeah warehouse. But the injections didn't work and instead deformed his body.

Then, according to the arrest report, Carvajal referred the victim to Dr. Mark Schreiber. But he wasn't licensed.

"We've had no information or contact on this doctor. As a matter of fact, for the record, and I think that issue of that first charge is that Ms. Carvajal had no idea that he wasn't licensed to be a doctor," Dugue said.

Police arrested Schreiber, who's still in jail. Meantime, Carvajal pled not guilty to the criminal charges against her.

"The State informed the court today that she scores at 93 months, which is 8 years. She's never been arrested and had no problem with the law at this point," Dugue said.

So now, Carvajal and her attorney will get ready to go to trial. If Carvajal does bond out she'll be under house arrest. Her trial is scheduled to start sometime in November.
