Worker Dies Inside South Beach Condo Elevator Shaft

Man falls while performing maintenance inside building

A maintenance worker has died after he somehow fell and was crushed inside an elevator shaft at a Miami Beach condo building early Monday.

The unidentified worker was performing maintenance inside the Ocean Point Condominium at 345 Ocean Drive when he became pinned between an elevator car and the wall of the shaft between the fifth and sixth floors.

Another employee was inside the elevator shaft when the accident occurred but was uninjured.

The unnamed man had climbed through the roof of the elevator to get in the shaft, thinking it was off and not operational. But the elevator started to move and the man was tra[ped.

Rescue workers were working to remove the man's body from the shaft Monday afternoon. Police are still investigating how the accident happened.
