Man steals watch at Fort Lauderdale airport, gets away

Authorities are searching for a watch thief who they say swiped a pricey timepiece while in line at a security checkpoint at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The unusual theft was of course captured on surveillance video, which shows the unidentified man grab a $6,500 Rolex that had been left behind by a fellow traveler out of a bin on Jan. 18.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Gloria de Regalado had placed her belongings in the bin to get through the Terminal 3 checkpoint, but didn't realize her Rolex was missing until she looked at her wrist to check the time 30 minutes later.

A review of the video showed the man behind de Regalado collect his belongings before quickly picking up the watch and walking away from the checkpoint.

After a stop at a bench to place the watch and his laptop into his backpack, the man was on his way. Deputies searched the terminal but couldn't find him, and with no way of knowing which flight be had boarded, the man got away.

Detectives believe the suspect may be from South Florida and are asking anyone who recognizes him to call Broward CrimeStoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
