Grass Fires Burn Up 100 Acres of West Miami-Dade

Plumes of smoke could be seen Thursday afternoon after grass fires ignited in west Miami-Dade County.

Two brush fires burned Thursday afternoon near southwest 8th Street and 157th Avenue.

Florida Forest Service officials say the fire spread to over 100 acres and have 80 percent contained.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue issued the following statement regarding the fires:

"Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and other authorities are aware of the conditions and will continue to monitor the progress of this fire. It’s important for people with respiratory conditions to limit your exposure to smoke- especially if you are at increased risk for particle-related effects.

MDFR recommends people keep their windows and doors closed and run air conditioners by recirculating the air inside the home until conditions improve.

If you have asthma or another lung disease, officials say to follow your healthcare provider’s directions about taking your medicines.

Forestry officials are handling the fires with the assistance of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
