Credible Lead in 35-Year-Old Disappearance of Girl: Palm Beach Sheriff

Christy Luna vanished in May 1984 in Greenacres

A Florida sheriff's office says they've started a dig site after receiving a credible lead in the cold case disappearance of a girl more than 35 years ago.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw announced Monday that the dig is related to the May 27, 1984 disappearance of Christy Luna in Greenacres.

Christy was 8 years old when she disappeared from her neighborhood after leaving a small grocery store where she had bought food for her cats. A massive search never found her.

Bradshaw said the credible lead came after the sheriff's office created a documentary on the case in May. Florida Gulf Coast University anthropologists will help with the excavation at the dig site.

"We believe that this is another dot connecting all the dots to hopefully solve this case and bring some closure," Bradshaw said at a news conference.
