Deputies: Drunk Central Florida Mom Tried to Pick Up Kids From School

A Central Florida mom is in jail after authorities say she showed up drunk to pick her children up from a Kissimmee school on Monday, NBC affiliate WESH reports.

Deputies with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office say Carlhie Thompson, 32, showed up drunk to Highlands Elementary School around 4:39 p.m. to pick up her children. A school employee noticed that the woman appeared to be intoxicated, and contacted authorities.

Thompson was with four other children, ranging in age from 2 to 11.

The officer who responded to the scene said that people were surrounding Thompson's car, physically stopping her from leaving with the children.

"When they realized that she could possibly be intoxicated, they did the right thing by notifying law enforcement and trying to get the lady to not leave the area," Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Twis Lizasuian said.

Investigators say Thompson's eyes were bloodshot and that they smelled alcohol on her breath. A Breathalyzer test revealed that she was three times over the legal limit.

Thompson was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and four counts of child neglect.

A judge set her bond at $1,300. Thompson remained in jail Tuesday night.

If released on bond, Thompson has been ordered not to drive without a license or drink.

It is not known if Thompson has hired an attorney.
