A Palm Beach County couple is heartbroken after having to euthanize their beloved 4-year-old dog following an attack in the backyard of their home.

Jenna Meyerowich told NBC affiliate WPTV that her boyfriend let out the Golden Retriever named Lola around 9 p.m. last Thursday in Jupiter Farms. A short time later, the dog was heard yelping and not moving when the boyfriend, Ryan Mennini, came outside.

Lola’s injuries were so severe that she had to be put to sleep the next day.

“I’m very heartbroken and Lola was my best friend,” she told the station.

Mennini told the station he heard people running on a trail away from their home after he came outside while Meyerowich was told by Lola’s veterinarian that the dog was choked and hit with an object similar to a baseball bat.
