Residents were evacuated from an apartment building in Doral on Monday night as officers responded to an armed barricaded subject after shots were fired, leading to one man being taken into custody.

Doral police responded to the 8400 block of Northwest 33rd Street shortly before 9 p.m. for a burglary call on a sixth-floor apartment at Doral Manors, blocks away from CityPlace.

Officers said they heard gunfire when they responded. SWAT officers were also called to the scene while over a dozen residents were escorted out of the building and the public was urged to stay away from the area.

"I said 'oh, that sounded like a shooting,' but it was not like a pistol, it was like a gun machine," said resident Carol Ramos. "Dah dah dah. Then after five minutes again and I said, 'that's shooting.'"

Just before 11 p.m., one person was taken into custody, police said. Officers arrested 34-year-old Sergio Van Kanten and charged him with multiple counts that included attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

Van Kanten, who has a lenghty arrest record in several South Florida counties, admitted to calling officers to the scene as well as shooting at a police vehicle in April at the scene according to Doral Police.
