Driver Arrested After Crashing Through Police Checkpoint in Opa-locka

A driver was taken into custody after he crashed through a police checkpoint and tried to flee on foot in northwest Miami-Dade Tuesday.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. as police in Opa-locka were conducting a license and insurance checkpoint at Burlington Street and Northwest 27th Avenue, city officials said.

The suspect, who was driving a red car, arrived at the checkpoint but refused to stop, crashing through and hitting an officer's vehicle, officials said. The officer wasn't injured.

The suspect sped away and crashed in the area of Northwest 167th Street and 27th Avenue, where he bailed out of the car. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Della Logan was driving at the intersection when the suspect crashed into her.

"The light was green for me and the policeman was chasing the red car and the red car just ran the light and smashed dead into my car," Logan said.

Officials haven't identified the suspect or said what charges he'll face.
