A car crashed into a Sunrise canal late Tuesday night, leaving both the driver and the teen who jumped into the water to try to rescue him dead, authorities said.
The incident happened at the Residence of Sawgrass Mills neighborhood, located off Northwest 12th Street and Silver Palm Boulevard, around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Sunrise Police officials said the 18-year-old driver was lost in the neighborhood, made a wrong turn and crashed into the waterway.
"It did take them a while to find the first person they pulled out," said neighbor Daniel Welborn. "It was like 15 or 20 minutes."

A 17-year-old — identified by close friends as Aden Perry, a junior at Western High School — was in the area with his mother and jumped into the water to attempt a rescue, but he too went underwater and wasn't seen for some time.
Fire rescue crews and police responded to the scene and rescued the teen from the water. He was given CPR at the scene and rushed to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The driver, believed to be the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's just unfortunate, who knows what happened when he went in there to try to open the door, maybe he got caught up in it," said Gary Grove, who lives in the neighborhood. "It's very sad, very brave act to do something like that. It's sad to lose your life over that. My condolences to the family."
Officials haven't released the identities of either victim.
The incident remains under investigation.
