Driver in Fatal I-95 Wrong-Way Wreck Gets 7 Years in Prison

A driver who killed a woman and left her brother severely injured in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade in 2015 was sentenced to seven years behind bars Friday.

In addition to the seven years in prison, Franklin Chavez will serve eight years of probation and must complete community service for the December 2015 crash that killed 23-year-old Carmen Criales and left her brother Bryan severely injured.

Prosecutors said Chavez was drunk when he crashed into the Criales' car. He sobbed on the stand during his sentencing hearing Friday, expressing his remorse.

"I'm terribly sorry for the damages I caused you," he said.

Brian Criales was in coma for months and suffered permanent brain damage. He can't talk or walk anymore. Carmen was on her way to the airport to attend medical school.
