Driver Killed in I-95 Crash in Broward

Tire caused chain reaction that ends in car engulfed in flames

An accident on I-95 in Pompano Beach cost a man his life early Thursday and shut down several lanes of traffic for hours, authorities said.
The crash happened just before 6 a.m. when a tractor trailer driving on the northbound lanes of I-95 lost a rear wheel, Florida Highway Patrol Spokesman Mark Wysocky said. The wheel bounced over the median, striking a car in the southbound lanes and causing a pick-up truck to rear end a Mercury Grand Marquis.

Police said the impact caused the Mercury to catch fire, trapping the driver inside. The unidentified driver was killed, and another person was injured, Wysocky said.
The accident caused delays on I-95 for over three hours. All southbound lanes on the highway were closed for two hours.

Drivers were forced to detour and exit at SW 10 Street and reenter at Sample Road. All lanes were reopened at around 9:30 a.m.
